p. 105 - # 1501 SOPHIE BARRETT (1920s-1931?)
| I had never before seen this early photo of my mother Sophie Ruth Meranski Barrett, until my cousin Harold Geetter's wife Ava sent this in September 2001. It seems to resemble several from the 1920s in New York, Philadelphia, and graduate years at Mount Holyoke College. However, during 1930 or 1931 she had a large mole removed from her left wrist, beginning I think with radiation aboard Navy transport HENDERSON en route to Tientsin, China autumn 1930, and then completed in China when results were unsatisfactory. The surgery left a permanent depression in her wrist near where she wore wristwatches. This picture puzzles me, because her left wrist looks fairly full. I am wondering if this picture was prior to surgery, with retouching removing the mole from visibility or possibly the watch covering it, which last I doubt. On the other hand, she is not wearing her wedding ring, which was picked out by Emmannuel Lyons, an older New York businessman who was very kind to both Sophie and Jack. He made the purchase for them as Jack left for Navy duty in Asia an hour after the wedding. From June 1929 until just before she sailed in August 1930, Sophie's wedding was kept confidential from her friends and co-workers at Macy's stores, and she used her maiden name. So her wedding ring would not appear in photos before August 1930. Any further clues or suggestions would be welcome to figure out date and place of photo. A New York studio name appears on jacket of this copy, which was in the effects of Sophie's sister and brother-in-law Rebekah and Dr. Isadore Geetter at 92 Fern Street |
