He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1911. His career with the Coast Guard included 26 years of sea duty during which period he served on the Bering Sea, Arctic Ocean, and North Atlantic Ice Patrols as an oceanographer, navigator, executive, and captain. He also served as ordinance communications officer at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, 1921-1924 and 1934-1936, as a lecturer at the University of Washington for three years, and as a ballistics and seamanship instructor at the Coast Guard Academy for three years. From 1940 to 1944, Zeusler served as the commander of the Ketchikan District and Alaska subsector. He attained the rank of Rear Admiral in 1945. He was a member of many societies, clubs, and associations including the National Geographic Society, the Association of Maritime Law, the Explorers Club and the Shriners. He also wrote a number of articles pertaining to Alaska and oceanography. The collection consists of a bound volume belonging to F. A. Zeusler containing reports, studies, articles, and stories on Alaskan natives and villages. Among these there are: reports by Zeusler on the condition of natives in various villages and his advice on the governance and education of natives; sociological studies of various villages by R. C. Sarrati, among which were Wales, King Island, Little Diomede, Teller Mission, and Point Hope; reports on the Amchitka sea otter survey expedition; a lecture by Zeusler to the natives of St. Lawrence Island, and other lectures by him concerning Alaska and oceanography; two native folk tales told by Paul Selbok of the Gambell Eskimo Council; and other reports and newspaper clipping concerning Alaska and the Coast Guard. The collection was presented to the archives by Alan G. May in 1984. HMC |
